Life without art would be sad and frightening, it would mean the end of humanity as a whole as art is an expression of each of us. There would be no expression to lift our spirit. Inspiration would die like the rest of all these powerful emotions that give birth to creativity. Art smoothes the pain and takes you places you don’t even dream of. I need art to escape the dark difficulties of everyday life. Either the sound of an instrument, the beauty of a canvas, the delicate move of a ballerina or the beauty of a three-dimensional sculpture, art is essential to my life. The plan is to incentivize the current spectrum squatters with a share of the revenue gained from auctioning off the spectrum -- mostly for mobile broadband use -- which only seems fair, and for now it seems those auctions will be voluntary. But that's just the tip of the iceberg: the plan also includes a $5 billion investment in constructing 4G networks in rural areas (with a goal to reach at least 98 percent of Americans with the service), a $3 billion fund for 4G R&D to help the rollout, and $10.7 billion for a wireless public safety network. The beauty of this plan is that all these proposed costs are offset by the spectrum auction, which is estimated to raise $27.8 billion, of which $9.6 billion will be dedicated to deficit reduction. Oh, and the best news? The government has already found 115MHz worth of Federal spectrum that it can free up by using its other spectrum more efficiently, and has another 95MHz worth in its sights. Hit up the source link to see President Obama's speech on the subject, which has just begun, or check it out embedded after the break.

via EnGadget c/o Chris Fisher

Yet another case study in how things have become more mobile, and if this bill goes through, true information will be more available wherever you are, ambitious to shoot for 98% but certainly possible. As so many today have really become more and more mobile as phones have become less expensive with more functions then a typical pc had in the 80s and early 90s. Devices that by themselves may as well be something as simple as pocket pcs. The abilty to access the internet and it's associated information no matter where you may travel is another benefit to an ever mobile society as well as a travelling classroom, to learn from the collective resources on the interconnected web, the limitations on access has been the one thing, that the hope is with this bill become a thing of the past.

More On Mobile Phones;

Is society Addicted to Cell Phones?

What Makes the Internet Great?

Cellphones For the Elderly - What are the Benefits?

Posted via email from Knatchwa - Streaming Life

Unetbootin | Ubuntu 10.10 & 11.04

Tonight I figured I would try an experiment on using unetbootin to install 10.10 dvd image that equated to over 4.2 gigabytes which was just a bit to large for my 4 gig usb disk and I would rather not burn yet another dvd image and waste one more disk on what would otherwise be a temporary situation. For a test operating system, which was my objective with this situation. Which warrants by itself an explanation, as previously I had setup a triple boot that included Windows 7, Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 using standard practices.
Now this was setup over two disks one being 80 gig and the other 160 gig with numerous partitions over both disks for data and documents. Worked well for awhile that is until within the last few days it appears that 160 gig drive ended up dying as it has been inaccesible since. The end result and the way to finish up this thought is since then I only have a total of about 100 gigs over two drives now without the 160 which held windows 7 and it's data. I thought it appropiate that it would be the Windows 7 disk that died while the Ubuntu disks have survived. Yet even still I reset the system to now run Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 10.10 over dual boot.
The message is either the disk was in itself bad or something to do with the seemingly constant errors on windows 7 using Nvidia could have had something to do with it. The drive itself was supposed to be a replacement for what I thought was a messed up drive. As that is also part of it as the history of the drive is unknown or how long it has been since it was new. Along with any other prooblems the previous owner had with it. Taking that into account may explain this particular problem, but to keep it simple I would rather say it was the Windows 7 Install that caused the problems.
To bring this post back on track the eventual result was that it was necessary to do a clean install, starting with 11.04 which though relatively stable is nowhere near stable enough to be used on a production machine considering it does not officially reach a stable stage until April of this year. Yet I figured I would give it a try at this point in the development, which in itself should be a separate post that I will be posting at http://ubuntu101.wordpress.com In the not to distant future. After getting 11.04 instaleed using the standard wizardI realized that a few key componets that I needed were not yet available on that distribution, such as Virtualbox and a few others, not to mention some of the tools I use to write these posts on my HTC Wizard aka Cingular 8125. One particular tool that I have found works appropiately is My Mobiler using Wine which is a Windows Emulator to run apps specific to that operating system and supports a majority of applications but not all.
After the initial install was done, I remembered unetbootin that enables a faster and simpler way to install popular distributions by adding a new entry to the boot menu and enabling you to install it as it is just like a live cd without the need to burn it saving a cd and time. I used this amazing tool to install ubuntu 10.10 as a minimal installation with the very basics which I later found out was truly minimal, in the sense it was not quite enough for the system I am used too. Unetbootin made things much simpler besides the addition of necessary packages to make it more like the initial install of Ubuntu by adding a series of packages using Synaptic once I had set up the needed desktop system used aptitude and apt. Both of which are, terminal based programs that are effective when you know how to use them.
This post has gone longer then I had expected it will eiether be continued at;
- ubuntu101.wordpress.com
- ubuntu1012k9.blogspot.com
Stay Tuned.
----
Raymond Marr
http://blog.homeofknatchwa.net
http://facebook.com/raymond.marr
http://helium.com/users/224664

Knatchwa, Opera | Reflections and More.

Just started exploring Opera, and it's suite of integrated apps, reminds me of the earlier revision that was Netscape Navigator. If So which ones, and why do you choose that over another?

For that matter the integrated mail system, is it better to use that over any of the numerous web based options? Really the questions I am presenting here are for those who are exploring these alternatives, these other mediums to do many of the same things we have done for as long as the world has continually been connecting more and more whether by mobile, email, social networks or what have you. We have become more and more connected and I wonder is Opera and it's Unite idea going to do exactly that, to bring people into their own community of user created bliss? When living the life of what otherwise would be considered a confirmed bachelor's existence. For lack of a better term or better more endearing term. Or simply because at these hours there are few or now words to use. At such hours I used to spend more time just chatting or really just waiting for those who I knew would be on late at night to come online.

It was not much of a existence you could say, since then I figured out it is important to live life beyond just that, there is a whole world outside of the screen. yet for so long in the simplest terms it was what I figured I could do, when the rest of my life is lived about the same as to many others. It is interesting idea you could say - that some would live life inside a computer, other's not so much. Just words being typed - there not much else to the story I guess - just thoughts running rampant and mind games not being played. Just random thoughts written down - no particular order or design. At least that is how this story is being told for the moment. The last of the late night jazz playing into the night, perhaps it also is a clue that sleep may be in order, thoughts?

Posted via email from Knatchwa - Streaming Life

Pondering the possibilities

Taking some time to think about and through some of the other options - used wordpress for a time, but found it to be a bit to limited for my purpose, so for the time being I am working on setting up www.raymondmarr.com for something new and exciting so stay tuned to the new and variable experience yet to come about.

Posted via email from Knatchwa - Streaming Life

Developing sites for users with Cognitive disabilities and learning difficulties.

Cognitive impairment, which includes memory, perception, problem-solving, conceptualisation and attention deficits. Those with disabilities certainly have special needs, and what the article mentioned above goes into presents many solid solutions to some of the best techniques in order to do that, to reach a wider audience in the community based ideal such as the Internet is.

Posted via web from Knatchwa - Streaming Life

[Focus Forward - Live Life Fully in 2008 & Beyond] Living Life - Existing...

Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today. ~James Dean

Putting Focus on the Future is often the most difficult step yet also the most necessary of the steps that need to be taken in order to make the quality decision to make that change to progress through the challenges and to make each day, each moment count by making the most of each. In doing that you make the first steps in the new direction.
To do that is often easier said then done, but it can be done and should be a constant in making a difference a decision that must really be made in order to step up to the plate, to make the most of your efforts and making the progress that is important through the tough times that are often inevitable in the day by day existence.
The factor that is important to be considered, in making a definitive choice to make the necessary change in order to progress through the challenges of this life. To make a quality decision, with the clear idea of living life fully that is more important then most things. Following the idea, that if you never truly live, and you just let your life pass you by you will miss so much. You only have one opportunity to make the most of this moment and the next and to make a change now to improve the future in leading by example. We as human beings always learn by observing example the factor that aligns with such possibilities. The point being the only way to make a change, is to starting changing what you do to offer a better example, to those who have yet to explore what is beyond the walls of the sheltered existence that is childhood, only seeing their parents as the example.
To change the next generation then is depending on the example the current generation sets for the children of the next generation yet to experience the world beyond this moment. They are completely dependent, on being taught what should be the future. To do that though is a long and enduring process, and is a matter of rethinking and changing the understanding of the situations by also taking the time to re-educate yourself. To Change Views - is a matter of seeing things differently, of making a slightly different choice of each matter.
In re-educating yourself to understand things differently and to progress beyond them and through them by researching the possibilities that exist beyond the current scope of vision. That is a part of the full spectrum of color that is often forgotten when the focus is only on the Black and White Aspect of it. We do not live in a Mono Chromatic world, though often it seems that is what is taught to only see red or blue, black or white, to miss the full range of colors and ideas that when seen and understood opens up the eyes and the mind the see more of the existence, more of the story. To stretch the mind just a bit, in helping to realize there is more to learn, and more to offer as an example of the importance of living life fully.
Posted via email from Knatchwa - Streaming Life

‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ - The Daily Cat #petweek 2010

Teach your children well. When kids grow up understanding the worth of the lives of all animals, they are likely to take those values into adulthood and pass them on to their own children. Not like the picture of the bike beside this text, weather like that will probably not be seen until Summer, or even perhaps Spring.
The question seems to be if you make a choice to ride a bike every Tuesday should you ride Rain or Shine or choose a wiser path, where when you ride, you know that from the start to the finish you will be riding with the sun at your back.
Honestly though for true riding in the rain there are tools that are needed, things like Fenders, like money just in case something goes wrong, things that are important on the off chance that things do not work out as planned. The point being, that it is important to consider the weather and how it will relate to your health. Certainly with the lightweight pants and a light shirt with a jacket that will dry quickly, it could be done, but to do that with what I have now, is an exercise in futility. It does not mean the goal is not being met, it is that the goal is constantly evolving just as we do from one day to the next.
Considering that as fact is a first step in understanding that goals though often specific can change, as time progresses there is the consistent inconsistency that will result in that particular goal, coming to fruition. 3rd World

As I was talking with a good friend of mine, that I have known for so many years, she reminded me even if indirectly of the idea that to many still use Windows in Philippines, and other third world countries, partly because Microsoft was so happy to offer them a free version because they were third world, and at first it seemed a great act of charity. Once I started thinking about it though, really what Microsoft was doing is setting in place, the idea that Microsoft is the only Operating System. Which of course we who are in the states, are aware is not at all true though that is the truth Microsoft presents to the seeing eye of the public. The monopoly that was supposed to be long ago broken up, had already put a solid foothold in the market. The difference is that in time, Microsoft became to comfortable in fact they started becoming lackadaisical in updating there Operating System, as they thought theres was the only Operating System in the market so why not just update every now and again, once in awhile. In that decision, one of the worst ever made, hackers started realizing that this Operating System that has ended up on far to many systems, stopped putting focus on security, and since every was using Windows at the time became the perfect target, and so begin the spread of viruses, simple ones at first that over time became far more advanced. It took awhile for the Microsoft folks to catch up and in that time there system was compromised many times over, as a result once it became clear that these viruses, the kiddy coding things were quite able to do more destruction then imagined, a new industry was born, the Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware folks, like Norton and others who suddenly realized hey we have all these people with thes insecure systems let us step it up and turn a profit on the futility of Microsoft lackluster interest. And that was the start of this insane industry today. So what was Microsoft going to do, after people started realizing they stopped caring and put the end user at risk?

First they started putting updates out a bit more often, though still far behind the needs of the times, as new viruses and spyware were being created and put out onto this worldwide web who used Internet Explorer on a windows pc every single day. They still did not put the level of focus on security but instead kept lining there pockets with more green paper at least until people started realizing, this Microsoft is a monopoly, they do not care about the end user as much as they should and it is about time to put competition back into the mix and so begin the first case of this Monolith Monopoly that was Microsoft that over the years and processions finally came to a point of change, in the sense that instead of being the monopoly it was Microsoft had to stop limiting competing programs and operating systems by integrating their browser with windows. Also it was made clear that more of the money being made also needed to be used to help third world countries, via the Gates Foundation. Seemed like a good idea at the time but there was a problem, as any third world countrie had no idea there were other options and as a result went full bore with Microsoft, closing off even that after market to competitors. Giving laptops and desktops away with the windows operating system, the same operating system people in the states had been forced to use to long, the same operating system that was still a primary target for viruses, spyware and many things malicious. At first they were happy and thankful, then it started again, viruses, spyware, blue screens all the regular microsoft issues that far to many already know well enough, but there was no other education to the end user of the other options to be explored so computers went down and people had no idea how to fix it, and instead just went without a computer casting it aside thinking there was not way to recover from a virus when there actually was.

Certainly you would guess it should not matter so much, unless you consider that many of those in third world countries, have relatives, friends who are abroad and the computer was the one way they could keep in touch. Such as my friend whom I mentioned earlier, her pc that was still in the Phillipines had gone down because of a virus and her mother had no idea how to fix it or solve it. It is sad simply because of the fact that without that she could not keep in touch with her daughter or friends/family who were abroad at the time, making her life a lonely one. With her granddaughter in the states and her other grand child elsewhere empty nesting became clear and frustrating, and the end result I don't know. There are possibilities of course and one of the reasons I decided to fund the 3rd World Country Fund as found on Facebook, was to try and to something about that. To bring more people to the open source world, where things are more secure and updates a constant with a graphical interface that rivals even Microsofts best, without the security flaws and absolute disregard for the situations of an insecure system. To bring open source to these places seems to make sense to me, to give people back their way to communicate, to experience to keep in touch with family and relatives even at distance while also supporting an ever increasing community initiative.

So whether what Microsoft offered because of court decision, it seems really they did not help the situation of those in 3rd World, instead brought this countries problems of a failed Operating System to a great mass of less educated people, in the sense that in offering these systems to those in the third world they actually only extended the issues we have dealt with for so long. So what I propose is that we come together and make a difference, join the cause on Facebook and bring the vision to fruition while reconnecting family and friends with those who would of otherwise been lost simply because they were offered an inferior operating system, unpatched without the awareness of understanding of what is best done to make sure the computer, the connection to the world at large does the job without the issue of being shutdown because of a windows virus that found it's way in through any of the many security flaws of Windows.

Why not take the steps now to join the Cause Bringing technology to the third world on facebook uniting together in a common idea and common vision to help those who may not be aware to join the movement to bring Open Source to the World At Large, everyone person who joins in thsi journey will see what a difference each one can make in helping those who may otherwise be lost to keep in touch with those they care about even at distance.

The Cost of Convenience Of A Connected World

In the last few days, the internet has been down, without internet available I realized some things, one of the most clear ideas was without the convenience of internet at home it was necessary to go out to reconnect, not so bad I know. What really had me thinking was while it is available days would pass, hours would fly by and life pretty much flied by also. In that I begin to wonder how high is the cost for the convenience, in this connected world? When all you need to do is sit down at the computer, open up the browser (Firefox I would hope) and be online, only getting up for an occasional drink or snack, very little or no activity, no exercise except for the occasional walk up the stairs only to make something and back down and sit at the computer again.

As I thought about this I realized that though it was nice to have an always on connection, the consequence of this convenience we have become used to, is not ever getting outside, forgetting about exercise and just living your life online and in front of a computer. Forgetting so quickly how important exercise truly is to live a long life, preventing maladies, and early aging. With the convenience nothing ever gets done as far as getting outside, experiencing the day, with it's sun or wind, clouds, or the perfect sunset that would of otherwise not been seen or shared. A photo doesn't quite see it as the eyes of a person who even if they work on the computer for the day never forgets that the day is to be experienced.

Instead to be content with self happiness, from looking at a screen, moving a mouse, typing a phrase, and pressing enter. All the while a day becomes the night, as the hours pass. To finally get up tired, irritated not knowing why. Not taking the time to understand what it is, and the why that exists that you may be trying to not see. To just sleep, to awake to another day of very much the same, losing days off your life simply because you did not go outside and enjoy the world as it is presented. The same story, selective ignorance in it's purest form. Understand I am not trying to insult you, instead trying to help people and society to remember there is a whole other world outside of the computer screen that really should be experienced even if you work from home online, to not forget the natural beauty and health benefits of something as simple as a walk or a bike ride.

Why not stop the cycle, realize that there is a message your body is sharing with you, when you are feeling tired, irritated after a day of computing. That we as humans should enjoy the sun, the wind in your face, the sunset you see with your own eyes. The natural sounds that are often forgotten as a simple as a bird who sings, the sounds of the leaves as the winds blows them to and fro. Such simple sounds, such basic pleasures that are lost if you just spend the day in front of a computer, there is so much more to life when it is experienced. It cannot be experienced if you only spend the day and nights in front of a computer. The consequence of a world connected is really through each person awareness or lack of beyond the connected world.

Yet in today's society, there is a want for that same convenience, whether it is as a result of focused media attention, that attempts to control the public's view or simply a selective ignorance something must be done, there needs to be change. As at this time this habit of living life conveniently becomes a downward spiral that in it's eventual descent will result in many of the generations to come forgetting about the wonders of the world outside.

As we as a society, are dealing with obesity due to the lack of exercise due to the unwillingness to work more instead of just following the path of convenience. To speak to that as the only way, when really there is much more to it then that. When others have it, it is not so clearly the only way yet still many choose the path of least resistance. To jump on the bandwagon, to keep up with the Joneses to keep with pace with whomever they think is the way they want to be, even if it is based on false ideas and old traditions that are due for an update. Why not realize you can set your own pace, and that it is not so necessary to keep up with anyone except the person in the mirror? To use the mind we each have and the free will that is part of the package to make their own choices ... for the best of you and your family, to be healthy and live a long life.

A world connected does not mean that exercise, experience passes you by, instead being connected is only a tool to improve who you are. Not so much as a way of life but only a small part of the life that should be lived fully. The internet is surely a wealth of information, the beauty of the internet is also that the information will still be there even if you don't spend whole days and nights exploring it. Better to get outside, take a walk, ride a bike as every little bit you do for your health is an investment in a better future, through a healthy existence. Each person needs to take the steps, remove the blinders, to see the world in it's natural beauty, a place to be experienced that is only a choice and a consensus of you and the person in the mirror to take those steps to live life fully.

When the sun has gone to sleep, when the day is finally coming to a close go online and see for yourself that the information is still there, the internet went on even if you were not there for every second of it. In this simple visual reminder, that it is better to experience the day then to just let it pass you by, getting out there. In that action in those steps to breathe fresh air to see the sun, then to share it as a very practical possibility, with your neighbors, friends and any one person who sees you out there and experiencing the day will realize it is really not that difficult at all. We all should live a happy fulfilled life, through the extension of time as you get out there and breathe the fresh air and takes those steps or rotate those pedals. We are each worth that consideration that results in a bit of extra effort, to live this life happy, healthy, and fulfilled don't you think?

-=Windows Playing On Windows Update=-

Robert Wheeler

It's better with Windows !?! Mark Shuttleworth, the father of Ubuntu Linux, has just announced a few minutes ago the codename and the goals of the next version of his marvelous operating system, Ubuntu 9.10 (codename Karmic Koala), scheduled for release in October 2009. "Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the *Karmic Koala*, the newest member of our alliterative menagerie. When you are looking for inspiration beyond the looming Jaunty feature freeze, I hope you'll think of the Koala, our official mascot for Ubuntu 9.10. And if you'll bear with me for a minute I'll set the scene for what we hope to achieve in that time." - said Mark Shuttleworth in the official announcement. via tuxmachines.org

A new name, a new experience what to look forward to in the next release, of a brand new variation, a whole new version of one of the most popular linux distributions. One which has been so popular because of it's flexibility and support of making progress. As the open source movement continues and with this new addition to the Ubuntu Line, can it truly become the primary operating system and the absolute escape from Windows and closed source. That is at least the hope and with some of my recent readings, there has been more talk of larger organisations, taking the step to Ubuntu, for the increased security, the ease of deployment and the constant updates as a result of numerous developers working day and night around the world to improve it and enhance the overall experience. Linux is a programmers operating system, which improve the ability to run most things from Command Line Interface. In that it also enables further customization, of each aspect of the entire operating system. Since it is based on GPL which enables any one person to help improve the interface and functionality. So each moment of every day, there is someone working on improving Ubuntu for the next Long Term Release.

The process is ongoing, so I look forward to seeing how this "Carmic Koala" evolves, not like Cadie (Google's April Fool's Joke) but instead as the next generation of a new and exciting beginning to explore this next generation. So who else is exploring this new version of Ubuntu, and what has your experience been thus far? Why not share it in the comments, or come join me at the Ubuntu 101 Friendfeed Room. Begin the discussions and share your views on Ubuntu, and Open Source as A choice and escape closed source.

Ubuntu Today - Growth And Opportunities.

To speak on this great opportunity and this great program I wanted to share with you some simple and straightforward views on how great a program Ubuntu truly is, and for that I felt this picture would be appropriate to show how well space is used and how straightforward it can be when you look graphically.

Now this is a great tool that can be easily be found by going to Applications > Accessories > Disk Usage Analyzer that gives you a birds eye view of what directories are using the most space, as well as giving you a way to look thoroughly at the design and format of the drive by clicking through each directory to know what is needed and what is not needed as well as what uses the most space.

The beauty of this tool, is in it's simplicity for drive, analysis using Jaunty v9.04 the most recent revision of the Ubuntu Operating System which can be found through the Ubuntu Downloads, where you just need to pick up the ISO image and burn it to a disk, giving you an opportunity to work with it easily. To even improve this further, It is also possible to just pick up an earlier revision then using the terminal command sudo update-manager -d to do a distribution upgrade. That is if you currently have an earlier version of the Ubuntu Operating system environment can more easily move up to the new and improve version that is 9.04. Of course it is depending on what version of the Operating system you currently run, but if you are already running it you know most of this by now and if not well now you do.

This article is using Jaunty as the operating system, so I would suggest either picking up the iso image and burning it to a cd or checking out WUBI which is a great alternative to a full install. Wubi gives you an opportunity to install it like most any other application in Windows, you just need to wait for the download and run the command. Wubi is now officially v9.04, so good to see progress as that is surely one thing that wubi has continued to improve upon, as every day and each hour community based developers are improving it as best they can, to build what will eventually be the better option and the means to escape the closed source world that is Windows.

In conclusion Jaunty (v9.04) has become more and more a de facto standard for those individuals who are interested in something new and different, to see how awesome Open Source Can Truly be, what are your thoughts, why not share them in the comments down below.

Increasing Stability - Jaunty

As a relatively recent addition to the Ubuntu world since v8.04 I wanted to share today, about the wonders of progress, and how Ubuntu is proving itself time and time again as to how valuable and stable it can really be when Open Source, and constantly developed by a cooperative of programmers.

Working together to produce something new and exciting and far beyond what was ever expected of a Operating System such as Windows.

The point being since v8.04 much has improved and is constantly revised and updated, early on there were problems though there were always solutions, from sources such

Ubuntu Forums

Ubuntu 101 Friendfeed Room

Numerous Resources found online.

Nix Tutor

Ubuntu Tutorials

Tombuntu

Ubuntu Unleashed

And Many Others.

These sources become a wonderful point of contact and solid support on this amazing distribution of Linux, and it's most recent revisions including this updated kernal that is 2.6.28.11, that is the most stable I have seen so before, and has shown amazing improvement and enhanced functionality. Many features, such as improved wireless card support, stability not seen previously. And it goesbeyond that, with a better support for to many of the programs and additions that have long been part of windows and was not quite as well supported with Ubuntu. With this new kernal that has been improved upon considerably so.

With this, current release and most current kernal I have found that Jaunty becomes more and more clearly, the better option then windows, with increased security and purely Open Source, programs and operating parameters. So the point of this particular entry is to speak on this kernal and how it has improved the overall useability.

<georss:box>36.6604934 -121.7728769 36.798167400000004 -121.53941789999999</georss:box>

The Challenges with Wireless - Ubuntu

Recent experiences suggest there are better options then Network Manager, which by my own experience seems to cause more trouble then good. Course I am still early on in that process, but am so far happy with Ubuntu and just recently setup Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate hard drive to check it out when it is fully installed.

Back to the point of this post, I can see by the activity of the discussion forums on Wireless with Ubuntu, that it is more then just me who is dealing with this challenge. On that point, I feel I should share my experiences with some alternatives to the standard install of Network Manager in Ubuntu. One possible solution is wicd, which seems to be better setup and a bit more intuitive. Before I will say much more on that I will have to explore it further, as far as Network Manager goes I can go on for a very long time on all it's tweaks and issues, but instead, I will make it a point, to put that aside until I try out wicd to see how that goes. Since I bought mine, it’s been running Ubuntu 8.04 rather than the default Xandros-based OS. The laptop is surprisingly unfriendly to Ubuntu despite being preloaded with Linux. Ubuntu 8.10 has delivered some improvements for Eee PC laptops, but it still doesn’t work perfectly out of the box.
via TomBuntu

I have not used, EEE PC, but as I was doing some research for a friend of mine I came about this site, that goes into great detail about the initial install and how simple it can really be. As I read further it is good to know that EEE PC comes preloaded with a variation of Open Source Xandros, which is a variation of Linux.

It is truly wonderful to see that, that helps people step away from the annoyance and frustration that is windows. So in that I congratulate them, the challenge is once you setup Ubuntu on a laptop you can set it up just about anywhere. My hope is that this information helps, and until I get myself an EEE Pc I can only offer so much. Any other questions? Offer them in the comments.

It is possible to have Ubuntu or Kubuntu on a USB drive (AKA USB Stick or Thumb drive or Flash drive) or USB hard disk drive with persistent mode. This means that you can boot from a USB drive and keep customisations such as keyboard layout, numlock, preferences, additional packages saved on the drive. This can be done using linux or windows. You will need a USB drive of 1 GB or more. This page is written after having tested the instructions on a Peak III 1 GB drive. The preparation of the drive is explained using 'fdisk' because I had errors with 'gparted' and i could not give the partitions a volume name. I used Ubuntu to make the drive. In Kubuntu it is more or less the same. Where you see 'ubuntu' replace it by 'kubuntu'. I will mark the other differences.
via Ubuntu Wiki

Another aspect of EEE PC to set up Ubuntu 8.04 via Pen Drive or more specifically USB Drive since EEE Pc's do not have solid state drives, and to install it from a cd to a USB Drive would make sense. This is more specific to my buddy @thepete who has been trying to deal with the challenge of setting up Ubuntu on an EEE Pc via USB, so my hope is this additional tutorial will help with that circumstance. The eee Pc are a nice addition so that is a good thing, and as time progresses I will have to pick one up and explore it for myself.

Setting Up Wireless - Ubuntu 8.10

The problem is that Network Manager isn't there... which is why I'm now reinstalling.
via @Ubuntu101

Instead of going this extent, to the point of needing to reinstall one more time, just to see the Network Manager on Ubuntu, in order to be able to tweak the settings to work with your current wireless setup. I would first suggest connecting your machine into a wired network, whether it be at home, or a library, possibly even a Internet Cafe. Once you are connected you can usually update your Ubuntu Box via the wired connection and get the most recent distro updates. In simpler terms once you get the most up to date software from Ubuntu, many of the problems you may face in the early stages may of been solved. Now connecting to a wired network is one way, perhaps you cannot do that so below we will explore other options.

Possible Solutions besides a complete reinstall:

Using Windows system via Wubi

Order An Ubuntu Disk and Upgrade

Already using Ubuntu - Follow the Tutorial.

Option A: Using a Windows System with Wubi, to add Ubuntu through the User Friendly Installer.

Run Wubi, insert a password for the new account, and click "install". The installation process from this point is fully automatic. The installation files (700MB) will be downloaded and checked, after which you will be asked to reboot. Do so and select Ubuntu at the boot screen. The installation will continue for another 10-15 minutes and the machine will reboot again. This is it. Now you can select Ubuntu at the boot screen and start using it.
via The Wubi Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Option B: Order an Ubuntu Disk And Upgrade

This is pretty straight forward, each person can simply request them from Shipit and receive a burned copy within 6-8 weeks and then follow the procedure outlined there. Once that is done the hope is that will solve it. If it doesn't keep reading.

Option C: If you are already using Ubuntu it's even Easier using the Network Manager following the tutorial below.

Network Manager aims for Network Connectivity which "Just Works". The computer should use the wired network connection when it's plugged in, but automatically switch to a wireless connection when the user unplugs it and walks away from the desk. Likewise, when the user plugs the computer back in, the computer should switch back to the wired connection. The user should, most times, not even notice that their connection has has been managed for them; they should simply see uninterrupted network connectivity.

More information about Network Manager is available in Gnome website and wiki .

via The Tutorial

Try those options and see how they find you, I will update this later, share your experience.

Ubuntu 101 - Tips & Tricks

In this article we’ve compiled 101 list of Ubuntu tutorials. Applications like Twhirl and Woopra have become an important part of my daily computing arsenal. Over the past 6 month I have been running Adobe Air alpha which wasn’t exactly quirk-less. Twhirl never saved my passwords, never minimized to the panel, and the window always had a black shadow around it. A couple of days ago I decided to upgrade to beta, I thought it was going to be a walk in the park, well I was wrong.

Simply downloading the beta version and running it will not work (at least for me). I got a permission error, adding a ’sudo’ or logging in as root won’t solve the problem either. So what we will need to do is completely remove the alpha version, install beta, and reinstall our Adobe Apps.
via hehe2.net publish by @Voodoologic

Great information for those who enjoy using Twhirl or any of the many Adobe Air Apps, and are running on a 64 bit system, The tutorial this is linked to enables the full use of those same projects on an AMD64 Bit System, Great Stuff and more is coming soon.

As an update, there should probably be some level of understanding how there is an install or uninstall, so by most standards this may be a bit advance, soon as I explore it further will offer better understanding of some of the things you may experience with Ubuntu 8.10 on an AMD64 System.

Skype - In Ubuntu, How to Make it Happen

Skype is proprietary software that allows you to make calls over the Internet using your computer. The wonder of the current setup, is that from the first install of Ubuntu, Firefox is included, not Internet Explorer - the chance to escape Microsoft you see. So on that I just want to say how well the constant updates have been.

You should probably check at least every 3 days because that is about as fast as Ubuntu Updates depending on what you chose to look for.

System - Administration - Update Manager - Click Check - and Then Install

Simple as that to run the Update Manager using Ubuntu 8.10, Once updated you have a more stable, secure system and it only gets better from there. The Chromium codebase is the basis for Google’s Chrome browser.

Great news on the open source front - specifically to Ubuntu with the advent of The Google Chrome browser for Linux from the Great Folks @ codeweavers, who are the founders of what is called, wine which enables you to run windows programs in the emulator thereby enabling you to run most programs that would otherwise only run in Windows.

And in that, being able to run many of the more popular windows programs within Ubuntu, or Linux for that matter. The most updates were on a new install, while Ubuntu on the other hand has updated many times in a per week basis, to a point whereby you can almost be sure that just about every 3 days, some part of Ubuntu updates. And with each update you see constant improvement.

Not to mention you can be sure that every day there is someone working on the next update, as there are many who can work with Ubuntu making it a wonderful collaborative effort making it a powerful project that is constantly improved like the internet under regular revision.

With such a constant cycle of updates and improvements as each day passes more and more of the Operating System market is capture by those more interested in an Open Source Ideal. Then being limited to a closed source annoyance that is windows. The thing is that since many of the more popular games had been setup for windows people still must dual boot with windows on the hard drive simply because not all games work with Linux, Yet. In that statement and from my research that is one area that is also being constantly improved.

With Round 1 coming to a close ... seems so far Ubuntu is on top - we're going 12 rounds though so Round 2 is coming soon. :) Thoughts - Share them in the comments.

Continued Growth and Open Source Awareness

Good News on the Ubuntu Front, far as it goes both my sister and brother are interested in having it installed on their system, in a dual boot configuration, one with Windows XP that was pretty simple and the other with Windows 2000 that should be equally as simple.

It is good to see after using it and seeing me use it they are following suit, would you do the same when you see it or would you rather be stuck with Windows for the rest of your years?

There are far more options and things of interest in the open source movement will you join it or continue to be stuck in the world of closed source? Believed or not Racism is not ending it just took some steps towards progress.

With that though the challenge seems to be that now that we have both a Mayor and a President of the United States of Diverse Descent, making it clear that it is improving yet with change comes thos who do not want to see the change, who still hold Prejudice even if Extreme.

Still there are those, who feel that anything that is different on the outside even if the same blood flows through their veins we all breathe the same air. We all live and die regarddless of how it goes down. So the determining factor apparently for those who feel that anything that looks different on the outside must be bad and should be removed from existence. Of course just in that statement there is false information, a skewed view of existence that still resides in some based on their prior programming and the power of association.

With all these changes perhaps that will also be improved but with anything it will take time, the hope is that in the generations to come such prejudice will be forgotten or with the Commander and Chief being of African Descent and a mayor who is the same. In that there will be hopefully clarified and there would be more acceptance of what was once thought to be so different.

With this more accepted a wider range of view will become apparent and the acceptance more then it once was. Perhaps in that fact we shall see that things can improve and they will.

And on such change, the dream of Martin Luther King is hoped & realized and improved upon. It is merely a matter of the start and the continuation. Four years and perhaps eight could be what will help such realization come about. The big question is how many use Flock and would you set it as your default?

I think to really make that change from Firefox which I have been quite happy with, with it's diverse selection of add-ons and the fact that it updates regularly not to mention, that the beauty of Open Source is quite apparent and very flexible.

Also why I have made the decision to transfer over to Ubuntu instead of dealing with Windows Vista, we shall see how well Windows 7 comes about, but honestly I would guess, that I will not change back to Closed Source because it is far more interesting. And the development cycle is fast and direct there is always ways to modify it or update it.

I like the flexibility that Ubuntu offers and yet this is just my beginning experiences in something that is not Windows or Microsoft it is nice to get away from Closed Source and yet to many games still follow the standard. Still uses DirectX and that is frustrating, to try and escape the circumstance and the limitation.

There is talk that windows 7, when it comes out will be closer to standards and may actually not require a different renderer, and perhaps it would make buildintg websites easier. Speculation is easy it is the rest of the story that must be explored. When it comes out, I would much rather be able to try it before paying for it.

The cost can be prohibitive and it may not be worth it, seeing as you bought it though it is more likely you will stay with it. Not to mention the frustration that the activation has always been and continues to be one of the main frustrations and annoyances that seems to be par for Microsoft and it's story.

The point being that really the best strategy is to steer clear of Microsoft and focus on Open Source because that works out better for most individuals who have the opportunities to explore something that is completely separate from most anything else.

That is my choice, what would be the choice you would make? Are you happy with Microsoft's Closed Source, instead of exploring Open Source? Of Course the Choice is yours, so share your thoughts:

In The Comments Down Below

Or Explore the Forums @ hok-international.net

Blogged with the Flock Browser

Ubuntu 101 - The Beginning of a new Journey In Learning

This is an extension on the Ubuntu 101 Room of Friend feed I would recommend you check their regularly or go ahead and signup to take part.
